UNIX/LINUX
On-line
UNIX tutorial
A Better
On-line UNIX tutorial (but from the UK, so slower) with
BASICS for our lab:
- Starting up the machine:
- The PCs are in WS 160, open from 8 am - 5 pm M-F
- REMOTE LOGINS: You can also remotely log into these
PCs from anywhere on the internet using telnet (look for the "NCSA
Telnet" program on the LRC Macs, for example). The following
internet names and numbers(IP numbers) will work (assuming the machine
is running UNIX/LINUX)!
- amik.nmu.edu 198.110.193.101
- bine.nmu.edu 198.110.193.102

- When in the lab, if you see a "login:" prompt,
you'll know the machine is running LINUX (PC version of UNIX that is freely
available on the internet). Goto LOGGING IN below. Otherwise,
it is in Microsoft's Windows 95. If you are sure no one is using it at
the moment, you can reboot into LINUX (hopefully) by selecting "SHUT DOWN"
in the Windows menu, or if you are really feeling anti-windows, do a control-alt-delete
to reboot. NEVER hit the reset button or the power switch (unless
the other methods do not work). Give the machine some time. Eventually
(faster than the Macs at least) you will get a "LILO: " prompt,
at which point you can type "DOS" for windows 95, or "linux".
If you type nothing it should default to linux anyway, after about five
seconds or so. Then you;ll get to the "login: " prompt. See LOGGING IN next.
